on Folders – iOS edtion

At some point in the past, long after they were introduced in 2010, I was convinced that it was ok to adopt folders on my iPhone. At that point I subscribed to the theory that folders were messy, they were clutter, and were for the disorganized. There was one other reason for folders and I happily adopted this habit, it was a dumping ground for all the useless apps that Apple required me to have on my phone. Now, with folders, I no longer had to have a screen all the way at the end of my list to hide these. Once a folder penetrated my home screen at a coworkers insistence there was no looking back. They grew out of control. Over 180 apps, most of which I never opened, but I didn’t have to see them since they were hidden away nicely in folders behind much more frequently used apps.

And finally the last straw. My dock was no longer safe. A single harmless looking folder hiding down on the bottom left of the screen, following me from screen to screen, swipe to swipe. It just stayed there lingering, watching, ever so subtly suggesting, “come on Brandon, it’s not so bad, just add another, I need some friends.” Now I’ve had enough. It’s over. Mostly.

Only two folders remain on the home screen. I couldn’t limit myself to only 28 apps readily available, no swipe necessary. Screen two is a little bit more of a disaster at this point, it still requires some thoughtful cleanup that I’m not willing to do right now. There’s a third screen as well, a throwback to the good old days. There a solitary folder harboring almost 20 of the almost thirty apps that Apple won’t allow me to remove.

And yes that is #starksthepup watching closely from behind that folder.
