Two From Column A, One From Column B – 31 Days of March

Going into March I know a couple of things up front, my birthday, St. Patrick’s Day, a quick vacation in Florida and the Get Lucky 7K. Taking those first 3 things into account I don’t want to do anything crazy like I’m doing in February. I know there will be eating things that aren’t great for me, and I know that there will be drinking, particularly beer, which is full of both carbs and gluten, if you do it right. So I’m just going to take the easy way out and throw out a list of things and try to accomplish a subset of them each day in March.

Column A – Physical Activity

Along with continuing to run on my normal schedule, or maybe even more structured schedule depending on how the Garry Bjorklund half-marathon lottery goes, I want to do some of these things every day. The key is that they can be done without any gym equipment so I can take them to Florida with me.

  • 50 Pushups – This definitely won’t be 50 straight, that would be crazy. They don’t even need to be in the same session, just make sure I get them done.
  • Pull-ups – 2-3 sets of max pull-ups. This is like 5. Maybe by the end of the month I’ll be back to being able to do a full set of ten.
  • Abs Abs Abs – Apparently working on core muscles like abs is beneficial for running. Again, nothing earth shattering here, I found a simple, suggested abs work out as a follow up to a run, so I’ll try to incorporate that following my runs and possibly on some days where I don’t.

Column B – Mental Activity

I toyed with the idea of setting a goal of reading and completing 5 books during the month. I think I knew I would have failed at this. Is it possible? Yes. I’ve done it before. It’s easier when you’re particularly motivated by a series of books. In order to do this I would have had to sacrifice too much of the time I normally spend on things that I enjoy way too much, I would have rebelled against my own challenge. The goal of these challenges isn’t to resent them, so I’m not going to accept that one.

  • Read for 20 minutes – Of course I’d love to spend more time in a book than this, but this will be the minimum. During my short trip this will be easy. I might even be able to knock out a book or two. On the days when I’m not flush with extra time I should be able to accomplish this before bed.
  • Write for 20 minutes – Most of the time I’m guessing this would be towards a blog. But if you know me, I have an opinion on EVERYTHING and writing some of those things down would also be good practice towards getting better at writing in general.

It would be nice to be able to do both, but I don’t want to feel overwhelmed if I get to the end of the day and haven’t started yet. A combination of the two doesn’t satisfy the requirement. I have to complete one.

So like the title says, two from column A and 1 from column B each day during the month of March.

Also in March: I may look into P90X as a potential challenge for April, but I need to know more about what’s involved before I can commit to it.
