4 a.m. in review – January Challenge Complete

Summary: Generally I would chalk this one up as a success. It wasn’t necessarily as smooth as I might have hoped, and I learned a couple of things that may allow me to improve this in future so I’ll adapt and see if I can make this work going forward.

What did I learn: I really liked this idea. I’m definitely going to adjust a couple of things though. I’m not sure if it was because I didn’t go to sleep as early as I hoped, but I wasn’t generally in a mindset to be productive in the mornings. While I was mostly awake for a period of time after I got out of  bed, I would begin to get tired at some point. The biggest benefit that came from this was leaving for work earlier. Knowing that I could leave the office anytime starting around 3:15 really lowered my stress level and my commute time.

How did I do: I managed to wake up earlier everyday than I would have before I started. For the most part I wasn’t up at exactly 4 in the morning but by 4:30. I wasn’t necessarily productive 3 times a week although I did accomplish a lot of computer related things. I cleaned a couple things off my DVR early in the month. Caught up on a lot of podcasts that I’ve missed recently, but mostly I only had the brain capacity on that little sleep to listen to things on my computer while playing Black Ops 2 and throwing the ball for Starks. I did have enough time to start eating breakfast, like a meal, before work.

Where to go from here: I’m going to make sure I keep waking up early. I’m even going to keep waking up fairly early on weekends. I might not wake up early on Wednesdays though, I think it would help me to get some extra sleep right in the middle of the week. I’m going to continue eating breakfast in the morning and skipping caribou on the way to work. If there’s something specific I want to accomplish in my extra time I’m going to try and figure out what it is the night before instead of waiting until I wake up and then just playing video games instead. I may try to go to the gym once a week and on other days at least make sure I stretch or do something. Once it starts getting lighter/warmer out earlier that might be interesting as well. Generally I think something positive can come from this so I’m just going to keep going and keep adjusting and see where I end up.
