New Year 2014 – Starting Over and Changing it up

New Year

I don’t want to feel better about my accomplishments at the end of the year, I want to feel better everyday.

One of the things that I do, and there’s many, that probably annoys the hell out of people is change things up. Each of the past three years I’ve gone out and made resolutions when the new year rolled around and each of the past three years I’ve changed up how I was going to do it to try and improve the results, improve follow-through. So why should this year be any different? Even though I’ve done a much better job each of the last couple years than I had in the past, and actually accomplished some things I never would have without challenging myself up front, I still don’t feel like I’ve been very successful. So this year I’m not focussing on 2014 I’m going to focus on just three months at a time, and in reality, even less than that. So here’s a quick preview of what’s happening in Q1.

January:
31 Days of Fitness and building a gym habit. That is just about literally the extent of my commitments. And that’s awesome. After a whirlwind end to the year that included trips to China, Albuquerque less than two days after I got back and New York, and of course the many versions of the holidays I can’t wait to do a lot of nothing. I need to find my routine again. Get back into grocery shopping and cooking (healthily) regularly. Get to the gym a couple 21, 22 times. Maybe I’ll even have time to mark a restaurant or two off the ever growing Wunderlist that Snacks and I share. The only kinda-sorta stressful thing that I have going this month is the ongoing reviewing of options around getting out of our current residence, to be continued.

February:
It’s only 28 days and I know March isn’t really an option so my challenge is going to be no booze. Famine February? A sobering experience? Whatever. It’s only 28 days. The hardest part will be giving up wine since I don’t have a regular beer or whisky as much as I used to. Another month with no planned travel. Definitely going to check off a new restaurant celebrating close-to-valentine’s day. Cashing in one of my Xmas gifts from Snacks for a cooking class downtown. We’re going to Simple Vegan Dinners to learn how to make stuff that we may or may not eat. It’ll be interesting and I’m pretty excited to check it out. There’s the first three day weekend of the year in there somewhere too which is great, I’ll need to make sure to use that time effectively in starting to get organized for a lot going on in March.

March:
Oh March, you’ve finally arrived. Immediately heading out with the Snacks clan to beautiful? volcano-ey? tiny! Statia, by way of St. Martin. Seriously, it’s an 8 square mile island in the sun soaked caribbean. Six full days with two days of travel on either end. From what I understand they have internet, but I might just assume they don’t. We get back and spring forward immediately and then one full day to vacation recover before the work week starts again. I have a rule (it’s new) that I don’t work on my birthday so it’s going to be a short week. It just so happens that I get to partake in one of the Xmas gifts I gave this year and it happens to take place on my birthday. Imagine Dragons at the X. It’s hard to predict but I’d say it might involve a trip to Cossetta’s. I assume we might do something to actually celebrate my birthday some other night, but it can’t be too far off since we’re headed back out of town on Saturday. VEGAS! Somebody has a session to lead at Exhibitor  2014 so I’m gonna tag along to my favorite city in the world and keep myself busy for a couple of days. So for anybody keeping track for March that will be 10 days of weekend 8 days of vacation and 13 work days. Whoops, sorry work. Being so busy I’m going to keep it light on the challenge. I’ll develop some specifics about a reading goal most likely, TBD. Maybe I’ll even be able to return a couple of the books I borrowed from Delberto,Lead back in April.

General:
Not specific to any month I’m going to be attempting to implement a new work schedule this year, for a few reasons that I’ll get back to at some point. It’ll be an ongoing challenge.

Looking forward to Q2:
Goldy’s Run 10-Miler, HJ User Conference at the Palazzo in Las Vegas, Snacks’s birthmonth (some people get a day, she claims the entire month)
